 Home Maintenance: Tile Floors

As today everybody has a busy lifestyle, low maintenance solutions for interior design are a must. If you want to renovate your house, travertine, granite, marble and limestone tiles might be the best flooring options, as they can all offer ease of maintenance alongside with interesting design. But make sure you know everything about their maintenance.

Today, there are more flooring solutions than ever. from glamorous polished marble tiles to chipped edge travertine rustic tiles, the flooring material offer has never been so plentiful; if you know exactly what atmosphere you want to create in your house, it is so easy to find the appropriate material for each room. But in order to keep yourself away from a maintenance nightmare, you should try to choose the right flooring material for the right space.

Durability and low maintenance characterize each type of tile. But they all have different degrees of strength and durability especially when exposed to water, steam, liquid spills and the like. Therefore, how do we know what to choose and where? the best thing to do is ask for advice from a professional interior designer or check out specialized websites for answers.

Here are a few basic ideas about how to use each type of natural stone. For a hallway or a bathroom, non porous stones like travertine or polished marble would be advisable, as they are more durable, water resistant and don’t even need sealing. In the shower stall you should go with polished granite tiles that won’t stain and won’t lose their shine even after years. Limestone tiles are softer, more absorbent and would look better in a glamorous living room. For kitchens and counter-tops, resistant granite tiles would be the perfect choice.

As light colored tiles easily show stains and dirt, they need proper grout sealing. furthermore, all calcium based natural stones are acid soluble, so they should be kept away from some acid-based household cleaning products, otherwise stones might lose their shine. If marble tiles are scratched and bruised, they can be re-polished, whereas granite tiles cannot. most tile floors can be cleaned with a cloth and a special detergent which can bring back the natural beauty of the stone. In order to keep mildew away from your bathroom, mix 1 part of bleach with 5-8 parts of water and spray this mix to remove mildew off the tile surface. If necessary, apply a sealer on the kitchen tiles, to prevent stains.
